There are alot of things to know before you bring a rabbit home as a pet. This page is not intended to teach you everything, just the basics of rabbit care. I encourage you to do more research before you take the leap and become a bun mom/dad/family.
Recommmended supplies:
-rabbit pellets- we use blue seal show hutch deluxe -hay (Timothy or orchard grass is best!) We use standlee timothy hay -food & water bowls -a hay rack/bag/contianer -litter box, the bigger the better just make sure your bunny will be able to jump into it -litter. We use pine pellets from tractor supply. They do a great job soaking up urine -chew toys (keep in mind rabbits are sensitive and shouldnt have any chemicals/dyes. We really enjoy oxbow brand toys and occasionally all living things brand) -enrichment toys -an exercise pen -a hutch/cage as a "home base" (see my blog about sizing and proper cages) -nail clippers -a brush/comb -a carrier (for traveling & vets visits)
Daily care: -Rabbits need clean water daily. Some bunnies are super messy, some are very clean and dont make too much of a mess. Little ones tend to be on the messier side while they figure life out. -You should offer your rabbit unlimited hay. This is super important for their digestive tract and for their teeth. They should be eating roughly a pile of hay the size of their body each day. -Young rabbits should be given no more than 1/2 c of pellets twice daily. This will somewhat be based on each individual rabbit. I find that if they are offered unlimited pellets theyre less likely to eat their hay (which as mentioned above is very important) Once a rabbit is around 5-6 months we start to only feed them 1/4 c twice a day. Overfeeding your rabbit can lead to obesity & other health complications. (Read my blog post on offering fruits and veggies!) -You should be cleaning/tidying their enclosure daily. Making sure to clean up any accidents & dirty spots. -Litter boxes should be changed atleast 3 times a week. -Spend time with your rabbit! They love to interact with you. -Depending on the size of your enclosure they should be given atleast a few hours of free roam time in a bunny proofed area. -You can brush/groom your rabbit daily, however we know how busy life can get. Aim for atleast once a week, -Nail trimming should be done every 4-8 weeks.
